Terms and Conditions
North York Hood Cleaning sets out, on this page, the conditions attached to every job booked by phone or through this website: how a kitchen or a food truck gets quoted, how long the quote holds, what the signed certificate asserts, what the customer prepares before a crew arrives, which work is in scope and which is not, and how payment, cancellation and liability are handled. This page creates no contract on its own. The written quote for a particular kitchen or truck is the agreement, and where the quote and this page differ, the quote governs. Ontario law applies. Last updated: September 2026.
1. Quotes: what one covers and how long it holds
Every job starts with a free walk-through, at the kitchen or wherever the truck is parked. A crew member inspects the canopies, filters, plenum, duct route, access panels, rooftop fan and the route to the roof, or the truck's hood, short duct and roof fan. Nothing is cleaned during the walk-through and nothing is charged for it.
The written quote arrives within 24 hours of the walk-through. It names each canopy, its filters, the plenum, every duct section that will be reached and the fan, and states one price for that scope. Any item that needs separate approval, such as a hinge kit, rooftop grease containment, a new access panel or a fan repair, is listed on its own line with its own price. The invoice repeats the quote and adds nothing that was not approved in writing.
A quote holds its price until the validity date printed on it. After that date, or after a change in menu, opening hours or cooking appliances, ask for a fresh quote before booking, because the scope may have moved.
The starting prices published on this site, from $585 per visit for a single-hood kitchen up to ten feet and from $995 per visit for a multi-hood kitchen of two to four canopies, are entry points for typical systems, not an offer for a specific kitchen. Food-court, hospital, campus, care-home and shared-riser systems are quoted on site after the walk-through. Food trucks, filter sets, fan repair and solid-fuel appliances are quoted per job after inspection.
Where a section proves corroded, blocked or unsafe on the night, work on that section stops and the customer is contacted before anything further is done or billed.
2. The certificate: what it asserts and what it does not
After a completed visit the customer receives a signed health and safety certificate referencing the published NFPA 96 standard, together with before-and-after photographs of every cleaned surface. The certificate states which sections were cleaned and on what date, and names any section that was not reached and the reason.
Three things the certificate is not:
- It is not a certification of North York Hood Cleaning or of its crew. North York Hood Cleaning references the published NFPA 96 standard and is not affiliated with NFPA. No company holds an NFPA 96 credential, because none exists.
- It is not an inspection by a fire authority. In North York the authority having jurisdiction is Toronto Fire Services, whose fire prevention inspectors enforce the Ontario Fire Code (North York has been part of the City of Toronto since amalgamation in 1998). Thornhill west of Yonge Street sits in the City of Vaughan, where Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service is the fire authority instead. The certificate is a contractor's record that an inspector may ask to see; it does not replace the inspection.
- It is not a guarantee that the premises will pass a fire inspection or a Toronto Public Health visit posted through DineSafe, either of which covers far more than the exhaust system.
The Ontario Fire Code references NFPA 96, and cleaning at the published interval is one part of meeting it. Record keeping, suppression system maintenance and safe operation between visits stay with the kitchen or truck operator. The NFPA 96 page explains the standard and its inspection intervals.
3. Site access, roof access and food truck access
On arrival the crew covers the cooking line and sheets the floor under the hood before spraying anything. Proof of WSIB coverage and liability insurance is supplied before work starts, and to building management or a landlord as well where the roof or a shared riser is involved.
The customer provides entry at the agreed hour, a cooking line that is switched off and cool, and food put away or covered. Where the fan is in scope, the customer isolates power to the fan at its disconnect, or has an electrician do so, before the crew goes up.
Roof access and keys are the customer's responsibility. The fan cannot be cleaned or repaired from inside the kitchen, so the roof hatch, ladder or lift, and any key or lockbox code, are arranged before the visit. In a mall food court, a plaza unit or a tower with restaurants at its base, building management or the landlord usually has to agree to the access hours, and that agreement is obtained by the customer.
Food truck access. A truck is cleaned where it is parked or at its commissary, at a time the operator sets. The operator arranges a level, accessible spot with room to work around the hood, and isolates the propane supply and generator before the crew starts, per the safety terms below.
Scheduling is overnight or between services. A kitchen that closes on a fixed day or has a fixed break, and a truck booked around a festival or event, book ahead so the visit fits inside the window available.
Cancellation and rescheduling require reasonable notice in both directions. Any cancellation charge is the one printed on the quote and no other. A visit that North York Hood Cleaning cannot keep, for weather on a rooftop or any other reason, is rebooked at no charge.
4. Scope of work
In scope when it appears on the quote:
- Hood and canopy
- Plenum
- Baffle filters (cleaning and exchange)
- Duct and riser
- Rooftop exhaust fan cleaning, repair and installation
- Hinge kits
- Rooftop grease containment
- Food truck hoods
Out of scope on every job, whatever the quote says elsewhere:
- HVAC and air duct cleaning
- Coil cleaning
- Dryer vent cleaning
- Sanitation and janitorial work
- Pressure washing
- Deep cleaning contracts
- Grease interceptor pumping
- Roofing
- Gas fitting
- Electrical work
- Fire suppression servicing
Where one of the out-of-scope items turns out to be the real problem, it is reported to the customer and left to the right trade. The services page matches a symptom to the right in-scope service.
5. Payment, photographs, liability and governing law
Payment. The invoice matches the accepted quote plus any item approved in writing during or after the visit. Payment is due on completion unless a different arrangement was agreed in writing before the booking. The certificate and photographs are issued with the invoice.
Photographs. Before-and-after photographs belong to the record of the visit and are supplied to the customer with the certificate. North York Hood Cleaning keeps a copy so the certificate can be reissued on request, and does not publish them with the customer's name without written permission.
Liability, stated plainly. Pre-existing damage, such as a corroded duct, a cracked fan curb or a worn roof membrane, is photographed before work begins and is not the responsibility of North York Hood Cleaning. Except where Ontario law forbids such a limit, liability for any claim arising from a visit is capped at the amount invoiced for that visit. No liability is accepted for lost trade, for the result of a third-party inspection, or for a condition the customer knew about and did not disclose on the walk-through.
Governing law. These terms and every job carried out under them are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply in Ontario. Any dispute is heard in Ontario.
Questions about these terms go to 647-797-9137 or the contact page. The handling of the details you send is described in the privacy policy.
Terms and conditions: frequently asked questions
Does the certificate mean Toronto Fire Services has passed the kitchen?
The certificate is not an approval from Toronto Fire Services or its fire prevention inspectors. It records that the named sections of the exhaust system were cleaned to the referenced standard on a stated date. A fire inspection covers the whole premises and is carried out by the fire authority, not by a cleaning contractor. West of Yonge Street in Thornhill, that authority is Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service instead.
Are hinge kits and fan repairs part of the same visit?
Hinge kits, fan repairs and rooftop grease containment are in scope and are carried out when they appear on the quote. They are priced per job after inspection and listed on their own line, so the customer approves them separately from the cleaning price.
What happens when the roof cannot be reached on the night?
Everything reachable from inside the kitchen is cleaned, the fan is recorded on the certificate as not reached, and a return visit is booked once the customer has arranged access. Roof access and the key remain the customer's responsibility, including any access approval needed from building management or a landlord.
How is a food truck quoted and scheduled differently from a kitchen?
A truck is inspected and quoted per job after the walk-through, at the location the operator sets, and is cleaned there or at the commissary rather than at a fixed address. Propane and generator isolation replace the fan-disconnect and roof-access steps a kitchen visit requires.
Which work will North York Hood Cleaning decline?
HVAC and air duct cleaning, coil cleaning, dryer vent cleaning, sanitation and janitorial work, pressure washing, deep cleaning contracts, grease interceptor pumping, roofing, gas fitting, electrical work and fire suppression servicing are declined on every job and handed to the right trade. Hood, duct, filter and fan work, hinge kits and food truck hoods included, are the whole of the offer.
